Rory O’Neill founded Castlelake in 2005, and is chief executive officer and managing partner. Mr. O’Neill is responsible for the firm’s overall direction, including all investment and operational activities, as well as establishing the firm’s vision, culture and investment approach. Mr. O’Neill also serves as chair of Castlelake’s Investment Review Committee. Known as an innovator in the space, Mr. O’Neill’s distinguished track record in alternative investing began in 1992 and has spanned diverse economic cycles.
Prior to founding Castlelake, Mr. O’Neill was a senior managing director at Cargill Value Investment (CVI, now CarVal Investors). During his 13-year tenure, Mr. O’Neill helped create and grow the firm’s global distressed investment business and was responsible for establishing, developing and managing Cargill’s Global Credit Strategies business in various markets around the world. During this time, Mr. O’Neill brought North American, European, Latin American and Asian markets into the Global Credit Strategies business; managing various product lines including corporate special situations, portfolios of non-performing loans, and opportunistic real estate.
Mr. O'Neill serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of St. Thomas and on the Board of Trustees at Breck School. He received his M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in finance. Prior to business school, Mr. O’Neill was with KPMG as a certified public accountant. Mr. O’Neill received Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of St. Thomas in business administration and biology, both summa cum laude.
